Jack London – Son of the Wolf -1st

Signed to Charmian London’s Uncle

Harley R. Wiley

March 1900 – Charmian Kittredge Wiley meets Jack London.

Charmian’s Mother was Dayelle Wiley – Harley was Dayelle’s broither. Harley was a professor of Jurisprudence at UC Berkeley. Charmian went to live with Mr and Mrs Harley Rupert Wiley when she returned from Europe in Dec 1901.

Charmian spent Christmas 1901 in the Wiley’s home. The Son of the Wolf was a gift from Charmian to Harley. The book was inscribed in April 1902 when Charmian and the Wiley’s visited Jack in Piedmont in April 1902.

The inscription is very provocative and revels Jack’s intentions. Jack seems to have made up his mind that Charmian was going to be his “Mate Woman” in April 1902 – Jack left Bessie in July 1903 – The same month Call of the Wild was released.

The book has a poem written signed and dated by Harley Dec 25, 1901.

The Wiley family played a very influential role in Jack’s literary career. Ninnetta Ames Wiley – Charmian’s aunt and Harley’s sister was an editor for the Overland Monthly. Ninnetta saw that Jack was going to be very successful, she introduced Charmian to Jack.

Jack was living in the home he shared with his first wife, Bessie Maddern London in Piedmont – where this book was inscribed by Jack.

Very Early inscription to a close family member. Inscribed copies of Son of the Wolf are very rare. The book is a second state – coma after the publication date.
